Garrettstown and Kinsale

Stay on the Kinsale coast and visit Kinsale early morning, stroll around the town when it is quite, dine in it’s any of its fine restaurants, visit it’s many shops and historical sites. Kinsale is full of historic tales.
It was from here Robinson Crusoe set sail from Kinsale in 1690. Retrace his footsteps around the town.

Visit the Battle site 1601 (Battle of Kinsale)
The Irish lost the battle of Kinsale in1601 which was to change Irish History for another 300 years. O Neill and O Donell marched all the way from Donegal and had arranged help from Spain (Spanish Armada) to fight the English but unfortunately due to bad weather and bad management the battle was lost. The origin of the name of the Spaniard pub is from the Spanish Armada.

Charles Fort is well worth a visit, it was Britain’s biggest star shaped fort, and a 45 min guided tour well worth it. If you like a walk the fort walk is lovely just past Charles fort and stroll along the harbor away from “the madding crowd” strolling along admiring Kinsale and James fort in the distance. Allow 2/3 hours

Back in town visit the small museum, Desmond Castle, St Multose Church built in 1190. In the graveyard of St Multose’s church some of the victims of the Lusitania are buried. The Lusitania torpedoed by a German U boat sank off the Old Head 1915 and it was this atrocity that brought the Americans into 1st world war, 1198 civilians 100 which were children perished on that fine day on May 7, 1915. Stroll along the pier and notice the monuments to lost sea men, admire the many yachts on the Marina,

Take a guided walk around town or hop on harbour cruise www.kinsaleharbourcruises.com if you are little more energetic head to the Marina at the Trident Hotel and hire any type of sail or high powered boat or Kayak and see the town like a real sailor www.allaaboardkinsale.com.

After your day in Kinsale leave the hustle and bustle cross the bridge and follow the R600 west and enter an area of peace and tranquilly, experience real Ireland along the Kinsale Coast on your way to The Blue Horizon Garrettstown Kinsale accommodation.
